Huntsville's Magnolia Garden

A place of beauty, just south of City Hall

WHAT IS IT? Only a few hundred feet from the front door of City Hall is the beginning of
Huntsville’s first ‘pocket park.’ The materials are being bought with memorials and other donations; planting is done by Huntsville's Urban Forestry and Horticulture Section, and by volunteers under city guidance.

The Magnolia Garden is located just south of Huntsville's City Hall
(308 Fountain Circle, 1/2 block southwest of the Courthouse Square.)

HOW DID IT START?

The garden started from a cucumber magnolia planted by Huntsville's Federated Garden Clubs to mark the Alabama Reunion. From this beginning, Landscape Architect Scott Griess of Huntsville's Planning Department developed a planting plan, which was soon approved by the open space committee of Huntsville's beautification board, and adopted as an official prolect by the city's planning commission. As donations have come in, new trees have been added, following the plan.

Only a few hundred feet from the front door of City Hall is the beginning of Huntsville’s first ‘pocket park.’ The materials are being bought with memorials and other donations; planting is done by Huntsville's Urban Forestry and Horticulture Section, and by volunteers under city guidance.

WHO PLANNED IT?

In 1995 the Huntsville Tree Commission conceived a plan to convert this forgotten space into a garden featuring every species and variety of Magnolia known to grow well in north Alabama. The city is resolved to buy nursery stock that is healthy and well-formed, with a structure that promotes long life and a structure that promotes long life and a minimum of storm damage. All planting will be done with the best methods, and the trees will receive regular preventive pruning to encourage strong, vigorous growth.

HOW WILL IT LOOK?

This Magnolia Garden is converting a forgotten corner into one of Huntsville's most beautiful green spaces. In addition to the Magnolias, the planting plan calls for various complementary trees and shrubs, a curved walkway with a loop at the end; inside the 32-foot circle will be several trees, shrubs, and a gazebo that is sure to please residents and visitors alike.

WHAT WILL BE IN IT?

Bigleaf magnolia (native) and hybrids Cucumber magnolia (native) and hybrids
Southern magnolia (native) and varieties Sweetbay magnolia (native) and varieties
Saucer magnolia and hybrids Star hybrid magnolia
Yulan magnolia varieties Gazebo, benches, lighting standards, etc.
